Handel in the Theatre invites orchestral musicians to express interest in playing in the orchestra for our Handel productions.

About the company

Handel in the Theatre was established in 2016 by Artistic Director Tobias Cole. We are passionate about bringing Handel’s English-language operas (oratorios) to Australian audiences, starting in our home base, Canberra. Our first two productions were The Vow (based on Jephtha) and Esther.

Our orchestra is typically 10-15 musicians playing on modern instruments. We love working with experienced musicians who share our passion for Handel’s music and our commitment to excellence, and with emerging musicians who wish to develop expertise in performing baroque music on modern instruments.

If you wish to join us on our journey, we welcome expressions of interest for 2018, and for future projects.

2018 Production

Our 2018 production, Handel’s Susanna, will be performed in the Canberra Playhouse on 1&2 September 2018. The orchestra will be led by Bianca Porcheddu and conducted by Brett Weymark, and currently has vacancies for string, oboe, bassoon and trumpet players. Orchestra rehearsals are listed on the Orchestra Schedule.

Paid musicians will be paid at the award rate. We may also have some unpaid opportunities for students to perform smaller roles within the ensemble.

Future Projects

We currently present one production a year in the Canberra Playhouse, and may introduce touring in the medium term. If you are not available this year but would be interested in future projects, please put in an expression of interest now so that we have your details and can contact you when opportunities arise.

Interstate Musicians

At present our funds are limited and we are not able to provide accommodation. However, as some interstate musicians have indicated that they are happy to make private arrangements, we are opening this call for expressions of interest to everyone.

How to apply

To express interest in playing with our orchestra, please complete our expression of interest form and email it, with a brief (1-2 page) bio and photo, to the email address on the form. (If you wish to share any recordings or video clips online, include these links in your bio.)

We do not have a formal audition process, but may contact your referees and/or ask to meet up with you.

If you are interested in the 2018 orchestra, please email your expression of interest to us before 7pm Friday 15 June (we anticipate sending out invitations for this orchestra by 29 June).

If you are interested only in future projects, we’d love to hear from you at any time.
